Holden Commemorative Mural01 Feb 2018
Street art is exploding at Elizabeth City Centre with a large-scale mural tribute to the GM Holden community and its people on our external Harris Scarfe wall.
Australian artist, Cam Scale, known for his most recent work on the Kimba silos, designed the artwork with support from former Holden and supply chain workers.
“It’s an honour to create this mural and represent something that’s been a massive part of this city for so many years,” Cam said.
Former Holden and supply chain workers and their families attended two focus groups to help provide context to Scale’s design to truly capture an industry that was part of the social fabric of the northern community.
The mural will add to Adelaide Fringe celebrations at Playford Palace in February and is featured through Street Art Explosion promotion.
“The mural is just the start of our festivities leading up to our three-day Adelaide Fringe program, Playford Palace, from 23 to 25 February,” Mayor Glenn Docherty said.
Scale has also had the opportunity to mentor an emerging South Australian artist, Sam Brooks. “Sam has a lot of skill and talent. It’s great to have a helping hand and someone you can trust to get the job done,” said Cam.
Sam adds, “It’s just a project I am so happy to be part of because it means something to me and my family... This artwork is very close to me as my family all worked at Holden and I just wanted to say thank you... My mum is proud of me, but also found it a coincidence because when she was working at Holden she came to this bus stop every single day.”
The commemorative piece will span across 40 metres of external wall by the centre's northern/Harris Scafe entrance on the corner of Oxenham Drive and Playford Boulevard.
